FOX5DC Tree topples over on National Mall near Washington Monument.

WASHINGTON (FOX 5 DC) – A large tree fell near the Washington Monument on the National Mall over the weekend.

The National Park Service said the saturated ground caused the tree to topple. The DC region has been inundated with rainfall in 2019 following the wettest year on record.

The mulberry tree that fell predates the dedication of the Washington Monument, according to the National Park Service. Officials said their tree crew was weighing options to see if the tree can be saved.
